Jesus’ death was a devastating blow to the disciples. Despite his promise to return, none had remembered his words or believed he would be raised from the dead as he said he would: the women returned to complete the burial process, most of the men disregarded the women’s testimony of the empty tomb, and Peter rushes to confirm what he has heard but is dumbfounded when he finds it as the women said. The empty tomb is the most profound event in history since the creation of the world, and our ongoing and ever-growing response to it has reverberations today and throughout eternity.
