“I am your father” is one of, if not the most iconic lines from the Star Wars movie franchise. Darth Vader’s revelation that he was Luke’s father transformed the storyline from a simple good versus bad to a complex relational struggle that had reverberations throughout the rest of the film franchise. An even more profound revelation occurs when Peter acknowledges that he believes Jesus to be the long-awaited Messiah. Upon his confession, Jesus begins to teach and lead the disciples differently, for his time had now come to fulfill the ultimate purpose for which he came. The reverberations of Peter’s confession are still felt two millennia later, not only in the life of the church which has circumvented the globe, but in the life of each person who is presented with the gospel and confronted with the question asked of Peter, “who do you say that I am?”
