Psalm 121
A song of ascents.
1 I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
2 My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
3 He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
4 indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
6 the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.
When things are challenging, who do you turn to? What provides comfort in times of difficulty? Family? Friends? Ice cream? Entertainment? Social media? Alcohol? Physical activity? Of course, the Christian response should be “I turn to Jesus” but if we are honest there are moments, if not patterns, in our lives where this is not true, where we turn to someone or something else in times of trouble. So what are we to do? Do we beat ourselves up for being sinful in turning to other things? Do we accept our failure and vow to do better next time? Do we find comfort in whatever feels best in the moment and ask Jesus to bless it? As we continue the pilgrimage through the Psalms of Ascent we hear the psalmist sing out repeatedly, “my help comes from the Lord because he is trustworthy!” Let’s explore this biblical truth in worship of the God who never rests in providing comfort and protection for his people.
