Last week we looked at Numbers 20 where Moses went to God because of the Israelites’ complaints yet again. God in his loving faithfulness provides a solution to their plea and brings forth water from a rock so that they can drink and wash. Moses went the right direction seeking direction from God in the face of the Israelite cries, but his actions were a disaster as he put himself in the place of God. This week as we continue our two-part series, Love God, Love His People, Don’t Do Anything Stupid, we are going to look at the actions of a family during the birth of the church. Ananias and Sapphira, caught up in the fervour of all God was doing amongst his people, sold a property they had and gave half of it to the church. By anyone’s standards this is generosity in the extreme and yet they were struck down by God - why? what happened? This Sunday as we gather for worship we are going to look at this seemingly strange and harsh story in the life of the early church and what we can learn from Ananias and Sapphira who operated under the wrong terms even though the conditions were right.
