Chapters 1 to 4 of Luke’s gospel could be called “A Tale of Two Cousins” as they tell the stories of John and Jesus, from birth announcement to ministry preparation and engagement. However, as you read these chapters it is clear that although related, John and Jesus are not equal. Although each of their conceptions are by supernatural means, Jesus is conceived by the Holy Spirit. Although each of their births were attended by many, Jesus’ was proclaimed by angels. If you asked John as a boy what the temple was he would say, “it is where my dad works,” but if you asked the boy Jesus he would say, “it is my Father’s house.” As Luke tells the tale of two cousins, he is extremely careful to root this story in the relational and personal identity of John and Jesus. In chapter two it is made abundantly clear who Jesus is, what his mission will be, and who his father is.
