The Bible starts with, “In the beginning…” not, “once upon a time,” nor, “A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away….” but, “In the beginning…”. Although the writer of Genesis says, “In the beginning, God created” and the Apostle John says, “In the beginning was the Word” the point of each is the same, God was there, already, in the beginning.
Origin stories are important to us. We use them to give credence to our authority (or lack thereof), and as reasons for what we are able to do (or not). For centuries science has been attempting to determine the origin story for humanity, earth, the universe, and the resulting tension (albeit misguided) between science and religion, often leads us to miss the fact that God has no origin story. In the beginning, God was…already there.
2021 will kick off and keep rolling with a series on the life of Jesus, the Word, Emmanuel, who was here, in the beginning.
