Often considered one of the last voices of the Hebrew Bible, Malachi (meaning “messenger”) is a natural bridge between the Old and New Testaments. Through Malachi God said, “…the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come.” (Mal 3:1). Following these words a four-century prophetic silence ensued, but generation after generation persevered in sharing the message of hope that God’s messiah would one day rescue his people and end a battle that had begun in the Garden of Eden, “he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” (Gen 3:15)
Advent is a season of anticipation and celebration that God did come, and one day he will come again to complete the work he began when a host of messengers proclaimed, “Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” (Luke 2:11).
