James 1:19-27
Know It and Do It
As a parent I am always encouraged when my kids encounter an unforeseen or unknown situation and handle it well because of something they have learned in an unrelated event; using the information they currently know, they apply it and make an informed decision about a new, unknown circumstance. In many ways this is exactly what James is urging upon his readers: you know the word of God, and now in light of Jesus the Messiah coming, apply it within the circumstances in which you find yourself (1:22). To frame in his point, on either side of this command James gives examples of areas these displaced Christian Jews needed to apply God's word: listening/speaking, and anger (personal responsibilities), and the care of widows and orphans (corporate responsibilities). As we continue through the letter James writes to the Jewish diaspora, let’s approach the word of God in order to know it and do it. I look forward to being with you as we once again gather to worship!
